Ethel Manthey

Our vibrant beautiful mother, Ethel Manthey, from Eldorado Hills, California, passed away at 90 years old on May 8, 2022. She was born in Omaha Nebraska to Ukrainian immigrants, Norman Zlotkin and Esther Belzer Zlotkin, attended Central Grade School and Hebrew School in Omaha, prior to moving to San Francisco in 1940. She attended Presidio Junior high school and graduated from George Washington High School in June, 1949. Ethel went to work for Fidelity and Deposit Co. of Maryland Insurance Co. as secretary to the manager. Ethel married Harold Goldstein in 1950, they had three children, Wendy Louise (Ken) Jonah, Richard Michael (preceded in death, Nancie) Goldstein and Robert Morris (Suzi) Goldstein. Ethel also is survived by six grandchildren, Matthew (Christine) Petersen, Sarah Kelley, Elizabeth (Jason) Newberry, Adam (Michelle) Goldstein, Brett (Brandon) Foken, Shelby Goldstein and preceded in death, grandson, Erik Petersen. She is also survived by her sister Janet Goldstein and preceded by death, sisters Sophie Noennick, Chana Tornek and brother Harry Zlotkin. Ethel is survived by 8 great grandchildren Nicholas Barnhart, Adler Barnhart and Kaia Newberry, Austin Petersen, Hunter Petersen, Carsen Petersen, Kingston Petersen, and Benjamin Kelley. Ethel married Jerome H. Manthey, Sr (deceased April 22, 2022) on November 8, 1975, together they had 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Ethel and Jerry enjoyed traveling the world together on tours and cruises. They toured the US in Jerry’s Mooney aircraft and visited family and friends throughout the country. Ethel earned her “Pinch Hitter” certificate to be able to land the airplane if needed. Fortunately, she never had to. Ethel worked in the insurance industry for 38 years. She was a licensed independent agent/broker for about 25 years. Employed as an associate of Thomas C Boyle Co. , Peter S. Monteith & Assoc., Folger-Monterey & Assoc. and independently with Professional Insurance Associates of San Carlos, Ca. Ethel loved all social activities and was always the first to volunteer to help with community events. She loved her weekly Mah Jongg and Bunco games. Ethel was a great cook, a stylish dresser and a beauty queen in high school. Memorial Service will be held on May 11, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Green Valley Mortuary Chapel, Rescue, California. In lieu of flowers please make donations to: American Lung Association or National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute or National Breast Cancer Foundation.
