Douglas A. Eichorn Obituary (1940

Doug Eichorn (B. 1940) died peacefully in his sleep his home in Shingle Springs on March 11, 2020. A dedicated fisherman and avid sportsman, Doug had spent 49 years in education where he nurtured countless youth in education and athletics, earning him multiple awards as "teacher of the year" and the cherished nickname "Daddy- O". All who knew Doug were touched by his friendliness, energy, and good humor. Few ever discovered how this affable and humble man embodied resilience, rising from a his early childhood traumas in Utah, to become a popular star athlete at Pomona High School, and then on to achieve masters degrees in biology, education, and counseling. After 25 years of teaching, coaching, and as Athletic Director in Ontario high schools, he taught and was a stalwart advocate for troubled teenagers at a Los Angeles juvenile probationary camp, inspiring and transforming hundreds of lives through his mentorship. After retirement from his work in Southern California, Doug found his twilight years ripe with hobbies, love, and friendships. He and his cherished wife Oranne created a garden where they grew most of their own fruits and vegetables with a freezer constantly stocked with the fish he had caught and game he had hunted on his wilderness expeditions. Doug treasured each and every day, greeting the morning with his renowned whistling. His last day was spent cultivating his fruit orchard and vineyard. Doug is survived by his beloved widow, one son, three step children, five step-grandchildren, an older brother, two nieces, and a nephew. We celebrate his life and will miss him greatly. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Ventura County Rescue Mission at 234 E. 6th Street, Oxnard, CA 93030 would be most meaningful to him.
