James “Jim” Phillips, Jr.
January 1, 1930 – November 28, 2025
James “Jim” Phillips, Jr., age 95, of Sacramento, California, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, at a nursing care facility. Born on January 1, 1930, in Oakland, California, Jim lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family.
Jim proudly attended Grant High School, then served in the United States Air Force, and later earned his Bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley. He built a successful career as an air conditioning technician, where his skill and innovation led him to develop patents that advanced the industry. His curiosity and determination also extended to aviation—Jim was an accomplished pilot who loved flying airplanes.
A pillar of his community, Jim was a devoted member of the Sacramento Rotary Club for more than 70 years, embodying the spirit of service and fellowship throughout his life.
Beyond his professional and civic accomplishments, Jim had a deep love for the outdoors. He spent countless days hiking in Yosemite National Park and the Groveland area, always bringing ice cream along to share—a tradition that perfectly reflected his joyful and generous spirit. He loved the Groveland and Big Oak Flat area and took pride in supporting the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society (STCHS) to ensure that the rich natural history was passed on to future generations.
Jim is survived by his children Carrie McGann, Jim Phillips III, John Phillips, and Catherine Phillips, and his daughter-in-law Brenda Phillips. He was a beloved grandfather to Brayden Phillips, Alyssa Phillips, and Lexie Phillips. He was preceded in death by his father James Henry Phillips Sr., and his mother Margaret Irene Phillips.
Jim will be remembered for his adventurous spirit and his love of life’s simple joys. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the values he instilled.
"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks." — John Muir
A private family service will be held to honor his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society (STCHS).
