STEVEN ALLEN WOOLERY
MAY 4, 1953 – AUGUST 27, 2025
Steven A. Woolery, 72, of Cameron Park, California, passed away unexpectedly at home on August 27, 2025. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Born on May 4, 1953, in Omaha, NE, Steven (Steve) was the first of four children born to Dick Murl Woolery and Nancy Jean (Mueller) Woolery. His family moved multiple times during his childhood as his father was building and advancing his career. After Omaha, the family moved to Denver, CO then Glenwood Springs, CO, on to Oklahoma City, OK then to Modesto, CA and ultimately the family settled in Citrus Heights, CA, where Steve attended Sylvan Oaks junior high and graduated from San Juan High School in June 1971. During his junior high and high school years he had a paper route with the Sacramento Bee. He worked every day, earned his own spending cash, won trips to Disneyland several years in a row for top subscriptions sales. He purchased his own drum set, motorcycle, and his first car. He was generous to his siblings treating them to meals and movies with his earnings. Steve took his senior year of high school off from work and went out for sports playing football, basketball, track and field. His years of pumping a bicycle for his paper route served him well as he had strong legs and great stamina for sports.
Steve earned an AA degree from American River College and attended Sacramento State University. While there he joined the Sac State Ski Club. He often spoke about their memorable trip to Telluride, CO in the mid-1970’s. He had great memories of his school days, the ski club, sports, and numerous friends especially Rick Caron, Jeff Metzinger, Dave Mrizek (deceased), Jerry Clark, Rich Green.
Steve left college to take a manager position for DeVon’s Jewelers at the Hilltop Mall in Richmond, CA at 23 years old. He also worked for Merksamer Jewelers when he returned to the Sacramento area. He worked in sales, sales management and project management positions his entire career. He eventually landed a sales position with Carpeteria, a residential flooring company where he performed very well and soon was promoted to General Manager over several stores in the Sacramento area. A position he enjoyed much and held for ten years. He worked hard to increase sales through advertising and implement improvements in scheduling and benefits for the sales staff. He particularly enjoyed working with the owner’s twin nephews John and George Khoustekian, whom he held in high regard and reminisced about often over the years. Steve then transitioned to the commercial flooring industry, working for DuPont Commercial Flooring and ProSpectra Contract Flooring. He was especially proud of his work at ProSpectra as a Senior Account Manager and achieved membership into their prestigious Chairman’s Club, the pinnacle for top producers in that company. His flooring projects included hospitals, schools, county courthouses, utility companies, Banks, and government projects in Northern California, including the Walt Disney Family Museum at the Presidio in San Francisco. He was particularly proud of the work done on that project. He found this work interesting and rewarding, he met many people, and often had amazing stories to share about his projects. During this time Steve met Jeff Pettit who worked in the commercial tile division of ProSpectra, Jeff and his wife Paula became very dear friends to Steve and Kathy.
Steve was a huge sports fan, basketball, football, baseball, and golf, but particularly basketball. Always a Boston Celtics fan, he also followed the Golden State Warriors, and the Sacramento Kings and enjoyed playing basketball in high school, at American River College, and pick-up games with friends into his fifty’s. He enjoyed football and was an Oakland Raiders fan back in the 70’s ad 80’s when his dad had season tickets, he was a San Franciso 49ers fan and enjoyed San Francisco Giants baseball. He loved music of all types and always had music on in the house, car, or working in the yards or garage.
Steve loved the Lord, loved his family and many friends. He was a loving husband to Kathy for 42 years, loving father to Kevin. Once he became a father, his life focus shifted to being the best dad he could be. His job demanded long hours, so his off time was spent with family. He much preferred to be home fixing things, doing home improvement projects, and having family time. The family’s favorite get away was to the coast near Monterey and many happy vacations were spent there over the years.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Dick Woolery. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Kathy Woolery, son Kevin Woolery, Mother Nancy Woolery, twin brothers Michael Woolery (Cathy), Mark Woolery, sister Linda Worthan (Scott), and numerous nieces and nephews. Steve was a presence in any room and loved to laugh and tell stories. Let him be remembered for his laughter, sense of humor, quick wit, and great smile.
